I have definitely been negligent in my postings under this category. When I originally envisioned this blog, my thought was that this would be a weekly feature, but they just wear you down. Week after week, you can’t continue to focus on their mendacity, duplicity, and stupidity. I realize, though, that I was disappointing my readers (all 3 of them), so I’m back with my nose to the grindstone to take on the most recent evidence of America’s political catastrophe.
The Mad Tweeter – There was an important Congressional election in Georgia this week for a seat vacated when Trump chose Tom Price to ruin the Department of Health and Human Services. This is a district that has not sent a Democrat to Congress since before Jimmy Carter was President – a Republican stronghold. Surprisingly, all the polls had a young Democrat, Jon Ossoff, leading by a wide margin. Any candidate winning more than 50% of the ballots would be elected. Otherwise, there would be a runoff in June. All observers viewed this election as a referendum on Trump, so Big Tweet had to weigh in. Trump sent out a series of tweets maligning the Democratic candidate calling him “soft on crime”, “soft on the 2nd amendment”, and “weak on illegal immigrants”. The President of the United States sent out a later tweet saying this young man, whom he had never met and who had no legislative history to review, would be “a disaster in Congress”. When Ossoff only won 48% of the vote in a dead Red district, Trump claimed victory and credit: “Despite major outside money, FAKE media support, Big “R” win with runoff in Georgia. Glad to be of help.” The big “R” win was the top Republican candidate winning just under 20% of the vote. Glad to be of help.
I won’t even begin to examine the report of Trump’s television interview in the middle of his campaign when he claimed that his main adviser on terrorism and security issues was a man, Carter Page, whom he had never met and whom he had picked from list of names he was shown because he was the only name listed with a PhD.
Jeff Sessions – That Jeff Sessions is a racist is undeniable. That Jeff Sessions is an idiot is obvious. That Jeff Sessions is the Attorney General of the United States is what’s difficult to believe. In an interview this week with a conservative radio host (surprise), Sessions opined,”I really am amazed that a judge sitting on an island in the Pacific can issue an order that stops the President of the United States from what appears to be clearly his statutory and Constitutional power.” Sessions and his spokesman quickly backtracked from his slam of Hawaii as being less worthy to participate in our Constitutional battles, but he never apologized. (Rumor has it that Trump has ordered his cabinet and staff to never apologize for anything they do or say. This will be worth watching given the frequency and severity of their mistakes.) Hawaii is not Alabama, Jeff, thank God for that. One more point on this issue, how can the AG of the United States not clearly understand that assessing the constitutionality of the President’s actions IS the role of Federal judges? It’s called checks and balances, Jeff and it’s critical to the functioning of our Republic.
Breitbart’s Influence – Remember just 2 years ago when Breitbart was correctly considered a racist, alt-right hub of disinformation spewing forth hatred and divisive nonsense about conspiracies? Ok, well, it still is, but now Breitbart has a direct line into the White House and exerts undue influence on America’s domestic and global policies – still without any rational or logical basis, of course. Recently, Breitbart set its sights on Sarah Nowrazzadeh, a United States civil servant of Iranian descent. Ms. Nowrazzadeh joined the Federal workforce in 2005 when George Bush was President. She was tasked by the Obama administration to work on the multi-country Iran treaty which was when Breitbart and other radical right wing fools noticed her. They attacked this woman with a wide range of unfounded accusations throughout the long treaty writing and ratification process. After the treaty was signed, Ms. Nowrazzadeh returned to the State Department and was placed on a policy planning team, as is typical of many civil servants’ careers. Well, a couple of weeks ago, Breitbart began to renew their attacks on this civil servant calling her a “Barack Obama loyalist” and implying that she was undermining the Trump policies (whatever they are?) and needed to be removed. They also falsely claimed that she had “burrowed in” to her position which I’m sure they knew was a lie against this young woman when they wrote it. The end result is that she has been removed from the policy team and placed in the Iranian section of State by the cowards staffing the White House and the State Department. I wonder what guides Breitbart. Is the daily question, “What shall we make up today?” or “Whose life should we ruin today?” The effect is the same.
